Signing a Vehicle Title in Virginia – Private Party Sale
When selling a vehicle privately in Virginia, it is important to properly sign the vehicle title to transfer ownership to the buyer. 1. Obtain a Vehicle Title:

– Fill out the “Seller” section on the front of the title, including your name, address, and the vehicle’s mileage.
– Record the sales price in the “Purchase Price” field, and indicate whether it is below or above the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) average retail value.
3. Sign the Title:
– The seller must sign and print their name in the “Signature of Seller” and “Printed Name of Seller” sections.
– Ensure the signature matches the name as it appears on the front of the title.
4. Record the Odometer Reading:
– Provide the accurate mileage on the “Odometer Reading” section of the title.
– Be sure to check the box indicating whether the mileage listed is accurate or if it is not the actual mileage.
5. Provide the Title to the Buyer:
– Once all the necessary information has been completed and signed, the seller should provide the signed title to the buyer.
6. Complete a Bill of Sale:
– While not required by law, it is advisable to complete a Bill of Sale for your records.
– The Bill of Sale should include the vehicle’s make, model, year, VIN, date of sale, sales price, buyer and seller names, and addresses.
– Both the buyer and seller should sign and retain a copy of the Bill of Sale.
