Instructions for Signing a Vehicle Title in Utah (Private Party Sale)
Selling a vehicle in Utah as a private party involves completing certain steps, including signing the vehicle title. Follow the instructions below to ensure a smooth and legal transfer of ownership.
1. Obtain the Vehicle Title:
– As the seller, locate the original vehicle title. The title should be in your name, free of any liens or pending loan payments.
– If the title is lost or damaged, you must request a duplicate from the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before proceeding.
2. Complete the Seller Information:
– On the front side of the vehicle title, fill in your personal information as the seller:
a) Print your full legal name.
b) Enter your current residential address.
c) Add the date of sale (day, month, year).
3. Provide Vehicle Details:
– In the corresponding section on the title, accurately fill in the following information about the vehicle being sold:
a) Year of the vehicle.
b) Make (manufacturer) of the vehicle.
c) Vehicle identification number (VIN).
d) Odometer reading at the time of sale.
4. Sign the Title:
– As the seller, sign your name exactly as it appears on the title.
– Ensure your signature is located on the designated line below the seller information section, usually labeled “Seller’s Signature.”
– Do this step only when you are physically present.
5. Include a Bill of Sale (recommended):
– While not required by the Utah DMV, it is advisable to prepare a Bill of Sale to document the sale transaction.
– A Bill of Sale includes information such as the sale price, vehicle description, buyer/seller details, and any additional terms agreed upon.
– Both the buyer and seller should keep a signed copy of the Bill of Sale for their records.
6. Hand over the Title and Bill of Sale:
– Once you have completed the necessary sections and signed the title, hand it over to the buyer.
– Ensure the buyer receives a copy of the Bill of Sale as well.
7. Release of Liability (important):
– To protect yourself from any legal or financial issues after the sale, promptly submit an online Release of Liability form through the Utah DMV website.
– This notifies the DMV that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle and relieves you of liability for any subsequent incidents involving the vehicle.
8. Notify the Utah DMV:
– It is the buyer’s responsibility to complete the transfer of ownership with the DMV within 30 days from the date of sale.
– Advise the buyer to fill out and submit the Application for Utah Title (Form TC-656) to the local DMV office.
