Instructions for Signing a Vehicle Title in Rhode Island (Private Party Sale)
When selling a vehicle in Rhode Island through a private party transaction, it is important to properly sign the vehicle title to transfer ownership. Here are the necessary steps to follow:
1. Seller Section:
a. Locate the “Seller” section on the back of the vehicle title. This section usually appears near the top or middle and is clearly labeled.
b. Provide the required information, including the date of sale, your printed name, and complete address.
c. Write the vehicle’s current mileage accurately in the space provided.
d. Sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title. Use blue or black ink.
2. Buyer Section:
a. After the seller has completed their portion, the buyer needs to fill out their information.
b. The buyer section is generally below the seller section and is marked “Buyer” or “New Owner.” Fill in your printed name, complete address, and the vehicle’s purchase date.
3. Odometer Disclosure:
a. Locate the Odometer Disclosure Statement on the back of the title, usually below the buyer section.
b. Both the buyer and seller must accurately enter the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale.
c. If the vehicle has 10 years or older or the odometer doesn’t reflect its actual mileage, mark the appropriate box indicating “Warning: Odometer Discrepancy.” Otherwise, leave it blank.
d. Both the buyer and seller must sign and print their names in the odometer disclosure section.
4. Bill of Sale:
a. While Rhode Island does not require a Bill of Sale for a private party vehicle sale, it is strongly recommended as it serves as additional proof of the transaction. It should include the names and addresses of both the buyer and seller, the vehicle’s description (make, model, year, VIN), sale price, and the date of sale.
b. It is best to have the Bill of Sale notarized, but this is not a legal requirement in Rhode Island.
5. Exchange of Payment and Documents:
a. Once the necessary sections of the title have been completed and signed by both the buyer and seller, hand over the title, Bill of Sale (if applicable), and any other documentation relevant to the transfer of the vehicle.
b. As the seller, it is important to keep copies of all signed documents for your records.
