Signing a Vehicle Title in New York – Private Party Sale

Selling a vehicle privately in New York requires specific steps to transfer the ownership. Follow the below instructions to ensure a smooth transaction:

1. Obtain the Vehicle Title: As the seller, make sure you have the original vehicle title. If there is an outstanding loan on the vehicle, contact the lienholder to arrange the necessary paperwork.

2. Complete the Seller Information: On the front of the title, locate the “Seller” section and fill in your name, address, date of sale, and the vehicle’s mileage accurately. Use black or blue ink and ensure legibility.

3. Provide Odometer Disclosure: Complete the “Odometer Disclosure Statement” on the back of the title, indicating the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale. Both the seller and buyer are required to sign and date this section.

4. Prepare a Bill of Sale (Optional): While not legally required in New York, creating a written Bill of Sale can be beneficial. It serves as a record of the transaction and protects both parties. Include details like seller and buyer information, vehicle description, price, and date. Both parties should sign and retain a copy.

5. Hand Over the Title: Sign the back of the title under the “Seller’s Signature” section. Only sign when you’re physically present before a notary public, as the signature needs to be notarized. Do not date this signature until you’re in front of the notary public.

6. Locate a Notary Public: Find a licensed notary public in New York who can witness the sale and notarize your signature on the title. Check local banks, UPS stores, or websites for notary services available near you. Carry identification documents like a driver’s license or passport when visiting the notary.

7. Visit the Notary: Bring the unsigned title, identification documents, and any other required paperwork to the notary. Sign the title in their presence and provide the requested identification. The notary will verify your identity, sign the appropriate section of the title, and affix their stamp or seal.

8. Hand the Title Over to the Buyer: Once the title is notarized, hand it over to the buyer. Make sure the buyer understands the importance of registering the vehicle in their name to complete the transfer of ownership.

Note: Do not forget to remove the vehicle’s license plates before transferring ownership. New York law does not permit transferring plates between individuals, so the buyer must register the vehicle with their own plates or obtain new ones.

By following these instructions, you will successfully sign the vehicle title for a private party sale in New York. Remember, it is important to consult with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or refer to their official website for the most up-to-date information on vehicle title transfer regulations and requirements.
