Instructions for Signing a Vehicle Title in Mississippi When Selling Privately
1. Seller’s Responsibilities:
a. Fill out the seller’s section on the vehicle title accurately.
b. Obtain all necessary information from the buyer, such as their full name, address, and driver’s license number.
c. If necessary, create a bill of sale indicating the details of the transaction (optional but highly recommended).
d. Remove the license plates from the vehicle (required by Mississippi law).
e. Provide the buyer with a properly released lien (if applicable).
2. Seller’s Section on the Vehicle Title:
a. Locate the seller’s section on the front of the vehicle title, usually on the top.
b. Fill in the date of sale (day, month, and year).
c. Write the vehicle’s mileage at the time of the sale (if the vehicle is over 10 years old, you may put “exempt”).
d. Sign your full legal name in the “Seller’s Signature” field.
e. Be sure to sign the title exactly as it appears printed on the front to avoid any issues.
3. Provide the Buyer with a Bill of Sale:
a. Although not required by the state, creating a bill of sale is highly recommended to protect both the buyer and seller.
b. Include essential details such as the vehicle’s make, model, year, VIN number, sale price, and the names and addresses of both the buyer and seller.
c. Both parties should sign and date the bill of sale for legal reference.
4. Remove License Plates:
a. Before handing over the vehicle, remove all license plates from it.
b. In Mississippi, you are required by law to remove your license plates when you sell a vehicle, transferring them to your new vehicle or returning them to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
c. Doing so will help ensure the buyer registers the vehicle in their name and avoids any legal issues.
5. Provide the Buyer with a Properly Released Lien:
a. If there is a lien on the vehicle that has not been paid off, contact the lienholder to arrange for the release of the lien.
b. Once the lien has been released, provide the buyer with the lien release documentation.
c. This step is not applicable if there is no lien against the vehicle.
