Instructions for Signing a Vehicle Title in Kentucky (Private Party Sale)

When selling a vehicle in Kentucky through a private party, it is essential to accurately sign the vehicle title to ensure a smooth transfer of ownership. The following instructions will guide you through the process:

Step 1: Obtain the Vehicle Title

Make sure you possess the original vehicle title. If the title is lost, damaged, or illegible, you must request a duplicate title from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet prior to proceeding with the sale.

Step 2: Locate the Seller’s Section

On the front of the vehicle title, locate the section that is labeled “Seller(s) Assignment and Warranty of Title.” This section will usually be near the top of the title and identifies the seller(s) of the vehicle.

Step 3: Fill in the Seller’s Information

In the “Seller(s)” section, you should provide the following information:

– Seller’s printed name

– Seller’s complete address, including city, state, and ZIP code

– Seller’s signature

– Date of the sale

Step 4: Provide the Vehicle’s Odometer Reading

Just below the “Seller(s)” section, you will find an area labeled “Odometer Disclosure Statement.” Fill out the vehicle’s current odometer reading accurately. If the vehicle is over ten years old, check the box stating “exceeds mechanical limits.”

Step 5: Complete the “As-Is” Statement

On the back of the title, locate the section titled “Notice of Sale or Transfer.” The seller should mark the box stating that the vehicle is being sold “as-is.” By doing so, the buyer acknowledges they are purchasing the vehicle without any warranties or guarantees.

Step 6: Consider a Bill of Sale

While a Bill of Sale is not required by the state of Kentucky, it is highly recommended to protect both the buyer and the seller. This document should contain essential information such as the buyer and seller’s names, purchase price, date of sale, vehicle description, and any specific terms or conditions of the agreement. Both parties should keep a copy of the Bill of Sale for their records.

Step 7: Hand Over the Vehicle Title

Upon receiving payment from the buyer, the seller should sign and hand over the now completed and signed vehicle title. The buyer will need this title to transfer ownership and register the vehicle in their name.

Remember, it is crucial to ensure all information on the title is complete and accurate before transferring ownership. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the process, it is recommended to consult with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet or seek legal advice.
