Georgia Vehicle Titles
Instructions for Signing a Vehicle Title in Georgia for a Private Party Sale:
1. Obtain the Vehicle Title: As the seller, locate the original vehicle title issued by the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR). The title must be in your name and must not have any liens or outstanding loans against it.
2. Complete the Seller Information: On the front of the vehicle title, fill in the required seller information accurately and legibly. This includes your full legal name, current address, and the date of the sale. Use a black or blue pen to ensure legibility.
3. Sign the Seller’s Signature Section: Below the seller information, sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title. Do not sign in advance or leave any lines blank. If there are multiple sellers listed on the title, each seller must sign.
4. Date the Seller’s Signature: Immediately after signing, enter the date of the sale directly next to your signature. This must be the actual date when the sale takes place.
5. Provide Odometer Reading: In the “Assignment of Title” section on the back of the title, record the vehicle’s current mileage accurately. Write the reading in the space provided and make sure to include the units (miles or kilometers). If the odometer reading is not accurate, or if the vehicle is over 10 years old and the odometer does not reflect the true mileage, you must indicate “Exempt” in the applicable section.
6. Complete Buyer Information: Below the odometer reading, the buyer must enter their full legal name, current address, and driver’s license number.
7. Seller and Buyer Signatures: In the “Assignment of Title” section, both the seller(s) and the buyer(s) must sign and date the title. Ensure that each person listed as a seller signs individually. The buyer(s) must also print their name(s) beneath the signature line.
8. Bill of Sale: Although not required by the state, it is highly recommended to create and sign a Bill of Sale. The Bill of Sale should include the vehicle details (make, model, year, and VIN), the purchase price, the buyer’s and seller’s information (names, addresses, and signatures), and the date of sale. This document will serve as an additional proof of the transaction.
9. Exchange Ownership and Payment: Hand over the signed title and the Bill of Sale (if applicable) to the buyer after you have received the full payment for the vehicle. It is advisable to use a payment method that is secure, such as cash or a certified check.
Remember to keep a copy of the signed title, Bill of Sale, and any other relevant documentation for your records.
Note: These instructions are based on the general requirements for signing a vehicle title in Georgia for a private party sale. It is recommended to refer to the Georgia Department of Revenue’s guidelines or consult legal professionals for specific cases or any additional questions.
